Individual Ideas for a narrative - Mrs Georgiou

Individual ideas for a narrative

There are many thriller films that have influenced me with different elements of each of these film. Some of these films are Se7en,Phone Booth,Shutter Island,Source Code,Taken and No Country for Old Men.These films do it in many ways such as suspense, not knowing the killer, mystery, being fast paced and the killer being relentless.
In No Country for old men the villain is completely unstoppable and relentless, he will do anything to achieve his goal of getting the money back. When he walks down the corridor he has a unusual walk almost like a limp.  He never runs which makes him even more unnerving and he is always only one step behind the protagonist and it is a constant threat this keeps the suspense in the film to a maximum. This is typical of a thriller as the idea is to keep up the tension as long as possible. I would particularly  like this in my clip as it just makes the antagonist that little bit more scary and less human. This's makes him seem more unstoppable and machine like in his ways.

Phone Booth is another film I take inspiration from in the way that it does not reveal the killer on the phone to him.The killer is on the phone constantly throughout the film and giving instructions to the man. This keeps the suspense up throughout the film and does not let it go,this helps keep the audience interested in the film.I would like to put this in my clip as it is good for a trailer as it makes people want to go and see the film just to find who the killer. This is why leaving the film clip on a cliff hanger is good for finishing a clip to keep people watching.
Mystery is also an important element in thriller films. This is particularly prominent in the film Shutter Island which has a constant mystery going on throughout the story line. The film gets to a part where an escaped prisoner cannot be found but nobody knows how they got out but all the staff are acting suspiciously. This continuous throughout the plot and even in the end  we still do not know what happened but that it was all set up for a prisoner. This is another aspect that i would like to put into my clip,  the idea that even at the end the  audience does not know the full story or that the story could be true or not.

A film being fast paced is also an important element in the thriller genre as it keeps the film full of excitement and suspense. An example of this is Source Code which is a complicated film but without it being fast paced would become boring. The man keeps going back to the start of the accident and this without this being quick the film would become repetitive. This is what I would like to put into my clip as it engages the audience and helps keep interest in the film unlike slower films.

Suspense is also a crucial part in all thriller films. Taken is a very good example of suspense in the film as the whole film leads up to one point where the suspense finally ends.So the whole film is building up until he finds his daughter and this makes it harder to stop watching. This is very entertaining for a audience as you need to watch up until the end to find out.I would like to include the constant suspense in my clip as it just makes it more interesting rather than building up suspense then wasting it in the middle of the film.

There are many things that I would put in my own narrative, suspense will be obviously in my clip as it is a thriller.A fast paced scene is what I would like as it keeps people's attention and makes the scene easier to watch.Mystery will definitely be in my clip as it just hooks an audience in and helps to create a different feeling to a clip. The characters I will have will just be an antagonist and protagonist, any more and it would over complicate the clip but any less and there would be no excitement. The plot I have in mind will be simple as with such a short time I do not want to make things hard to understand and the timing would be to restrictive. The two characters will be a male and female and the male will be the killer and the woman will be a victim this is sticking to convention as it makes sense to have the victim in a weaker position .

So I have decided my narrative will contain a chase scene which will create thrills and suspense which will entertain the audience. Also I would have scene where the victim does not know she is being followed this will indicate to the audience what will be happening and give an insight into what will happen. Thirdly I would like the final scene to be an enigma and not actually show what happened to the person, this will keep the audience interested in what has happened to the person and want to watch more. The characters will be just a male killer and a female killer. The male killer will be menacing and wear all black to signify how evil he is. The female will be blond and small in stature to show how vulnerable she is and is conventional in many thriller films. Also she is weak so it would be very easy for a killer to take her so this is conventional as having a weak victim but a powerful killer. The themes will be good and evil and innocence and power which is how they contrast in the clip.

The narrative will appeal to the target audience in the way that it is not too long to get into otherwise it would be dull but long enough to bring a sense of what is happening. This will give us a balance of suspense and thrills. This will appeal to a younger audience than some other thrillers as there is not much time between thrills and this makes a film easier to watch.

My target audience would be older teenage males and have a rating of 15, any younger and the clip would need to be toned down  but any older and a large target audience cannot see it.It will still be okay as a 15 certificate still allows many things but a 12 would be to hard to fit around with a thriller.

  1. The points that you have included on your film inspirations demonstrates a good understanding of the codes and conventions of a thriller film.

Now you need to explain what your narrative of your thriller will contain. This can be achieved by focusing on the themes, characters, plots, etc

Lastly, you need to explain how your narrative will appeal to your target audience
